A brief, clear overview of the basic science and clinical aspects of immunology. For medical students and other health professionals. The basic science section is a clear presentation of innate and adaptive immunity, immune cells, antibodies and antigens, and other components of the immune system and their interactions. The clinical section clarifies hypersensitivity, autoimmunity, immunodeficiency, common diagnostic tests, vaccination, transplantation, and tumor immunology, all in 85 pages!

Excellent USMLE Board Review.

What’s YOUR, Immunology Made Ridiculously Simple “WHY?”

Hmmm….

· NEED a brief, clear, and THOROUGH approach to CLINICAL IMMUNOLOGY?

· WANT to break down clinical immunology into the most CLINICALLY RELEVANT information in SIMPLE, EASY to read terminology?

· LOOKING FOR A TEXT brimming with mnemonics, humor, illustrations, and summary charts to maximize UNDERSTANDING and RETENTION?

· ALWAYS DREAMED of an excellent immunology reference for USMLE review and course test preparation?

· TIRED of passively watching and trying to reference back to “eye-candy” videos that require you to remember long, made up stories on top of remembering real clinical information, only to be left with a simple factoid instead of having a brief, meaningful text helping you understand an entire subject?

Complement Functions

Complement is a group of 30 or more plasma and cell surface proteins, mainly synthesized in the liver and distributed in the blood and tissues. They work in concert to fight the invading microorganisms through Opsonization, Inflammation, and Lysis.

The Antibody Molecule

Antibodies (also known as immunoglobulins, or Ig for short) are glycoproteins produced by plasma cells in response to antigens, which are foreign microbial and non-microbial substances. In an electrophoresis of a normal serum sample, the immunoglobulins form a broad band in the gamma portion of the protein sample.

There are 5 different isotypes (classes) of immunoglobulins: IgG, IgA, IgM, IgE, and IgD. The mnemonic GAMED helps to remember them. Each Ig has a different molecular weight and function, but they all share a common structural unit.

Vaccination

The first immune response to the infective microorganism (either natural or artificial inoculation) is known as the primary immune response. This starts after a lag period, the time period (several days to a week, depending on the pathogen) from inoculation of the microorganism until the appearance of the antibody. The lag period is followed by a surge and then a decrease in the antibody titerThe major antibody in the primary immune response is IgM.

When the host is later injected with the same pathogen, the immune response is known as the secondary immune response, which has a shorter lag period. This is due to the presence of a significant number of memory cells. The major antibody in the secondary immune response is IgG. The antibody surge reaches a higher peak than the first immune response peak, lasts longer, and has higher affinity for the antigen than in the primary immune response.
